ME108: Solidworks Finite Element Analysis (FEA)

Jan - March 2023

Context:

Took a course on using Finite Element Analysis (FEA) in Solidworks and Fusion360. Worked with 1 other to complete 2 design studies.

Skills:

  • FEA

  • Solidworks

  • Product Design

Preparation:

Before working on our projects, we covered topics such as

  • FEA capabilities and limitations

  • Product development process

  • Mesh refinement

  • Verifying FEA simulation results

  • Design Optimization

Project 1: Baseplate Optimization for a Large Diameter Vine Robot

We used Solidworks Simulation to optimize the design of a large pressurized baseplate for the base station of a large vine robot. The baseplate will be 24" x 12" x 1/8" thick 6061 aluminum. There are many portions of the baseplate that add mass but are unnecessary for the structural integrity of the base station assembly. To lighten the plate, we will replace sections of the plate with 0.016" thick 6061 aluminum alloy that will be epoxied to the larger plate.

Project 2: Leg Linkage Optimization for a Jumper Robot

In this project, we optimized a Hawkes Lab Prototype Jumper Linkage for mass and strength. A series of 5/16”-18 set screws will be positioned along the linkage to characterize the effects of changing the mass distribution of the jumper leg. The average jump height for the jumper is approximately 0.25 m, so any difference in mass will accentuate the difference in jump height of the jumper. The jumper uses a torsional spring to achieve the necessary impulse for jumping.
